Andy Mattern
Andy Mattern is a visual artist working in the expanded field
of photography. His photographs and installations dissect
the medium itself, reconfiguring expectations of
photography's basic ingredients and conventions. His work is
held in the permanent collections of the San Francisco
Museum of Modern Art, the New Mexico Museum of Art, and
the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, among others. His
photographs and exhibitions have been reviewed in
publications such as Artforum, The New Yorker, Camera
Austria, and Photonews. Currently, he serves as Associate
Professor of Photography at Oklahoma State University in
Stillwater. He holds an MFA in Photography from the
University of Minnesota and a BFA in Studio Art from the
University of New Mexico.

Rachel Phillips
Rachel Phillips began photography while completing her
undergraduate degree at Skidmore College, graduating in 2005.
In numerous group and solo exhibitions, she has presented a
series of projects exploring the photograph as object, often
resulting in unique works incorporating materials ranging from old
envelopes to 19th century cabinet cards. A frequent theme in the
work is a desire to “reanimate” the vernacular photographs and paper ephemera in her
collection by reworking them in a variety of ways to create imagery that is resonant with the past
yet has a new vitality and reflection of our own time and perspective.
She has served as a board member for SF Camerawork and Medium Photo, and as the Executive
Director of PhotoAlliance. Through her imprint Treadwell Press, she publishes artists’ books and
small collaborative editions. These works are widely held in special collections across the country,
including Harvard University, MassArts, Museum of Fine Arts Houston Special Collections,
SFMOMA Library and Archive and Yale University. She is represented by Catherine Couturier
Gallery in Houston Texas, and in addition to photography, works as a tutor for children with
learning differences.
Exhibition Statement
AFTER IMAGE is an investigation into the perpetuation of
images, a dialogue about the inscrutable nature of found objects
and an amalgamation of science, technology and photography.
Andy Mattern's Ghost series is an exploration into platinum
prints' unique property of "auto-copying" and how the artist re-animates these mirror images from century-old prints in the 21st
Century. Rachel Phillips' Vanishing Point is a series
questioning material weight and spatial presence; it challenges
the viewers' imagination when confronted by the object itself as
well as the void presented in original antique frames. Fixed by
Phillips' alter-ego Madge Cameron, an aging archivist, began in
2014. It is a whimsical approach toward an ongoing discourse
regarding the erosion of analog space and the ever-evolving
digital platform in photography.
AFTER IMAGE invites you into a world of curiosity, of science
and technology and of your imagination.
